RE: replacing bolts - constructed condition

They may have used "N" bolts for design, but it's entirely possible that
you actually have an "X" condition in the field. If the bolt lengths
were properly selected, then as long as the shear plate and the beam web
are at least 3/8" thick, you will have an "X" condition. It could be
less than that, if the bolt length selection included washers. See
table 7-2 in the 3rd edition steel manual. If the shear plate is 3/8"
thick but the web is not, whether you have "X" or "N" will depend on
which direction the bolts were installed. It's the ply closest to the
nut that matters.

Maybe you'll see it in the field, find out that you already have an "X"
condition, and you'll have a REALLY simple fix on your hands.

Subject: replacing bolts - constructed condition

Single shear plate connection from a beam to an embed plate (previous
post about this), in a constructed building on the third floor. I need
to increase the strength of the connection. It looks like they used
A325N 3/4" diam bolts (needs to be field verified), and a simple
solution would be to use "X" bolts where the threads are excluded from
the shear plane.

-Any problems with this in theory?
-Can they get the bolts out one at a time and replace them?

Existing building, this would be a weekend job, jacking and shoring as
of now are not on the table.

It would seem the bolts are already in bearing and it would be very
difficult to remove them... Looking for someone who has experience
with this and how it went.

Regards and thanks in advance,
